DESIGN NARRATIVE
LOCAL CONTEXT:
COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS TESTED EVERY SOCIETY IN ITS FUNCTION AS A SYSTEM. CRUCIAL SERVICES IN SINGAPORE WERE SURFACED WHEN MANPOWER IS LOW AND MANY WORK WERE FOUND TO BE ABLE TO BE DONE WITH WORK-FROM-HOME (WFH). BUT ONE OF WHICH THAT CAN'T BE DONE WITH WFH MEANS IS CONSTRUCTION AND THAT HAS NOT ONLY WIDESPREAD DELAYS OF CONSTRUCTION TOWARDS INFRASTRUCTURE DEMANDS BUT WAS BADLY HIT AS AN INDUSTRY DOMINANTLY TAKEN UP BY MIGRANT WORKERS. ENVISIONING A SELF RELIANT CITY STATE, A LOCAL SUPPLY OF SKILLED WORKERS IN THESE CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONS IS A NECESSITY. PERHAPS THROUGH CONSTRUCTION, A HYPRID CURRICULUM THAT ALLOWS MIXTURE OF ARCHITECTURE, ENGINEERING AND BUILDING SERVICES IS MADE POSSIBLE TOGETHER WITH TECHNOLOGY. HENCE, THE FUTURE LEARNING OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT, SG ARCHITEKTÓN.
PROJECT NAME MEANING
SG REFERS TO SINGAPORE IN SHORT FORM WHILE ARCHITEKTÓN STANDS FOR 'MASTER BUILDER' IN GREEK DERIVED FROM THE WORDS 'ARXI - FIRST' AND 'TÉKTŌN - CRAFTSMAN' WHICH PROPERLY MEANS A MASTER CRAFTSMAN OR A CHIEF ARTISAN. ARCHITEKTÓN IS WHERE ARCHITECT IS DERIVED FROM TO REFER TO THE ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BEGINNING TILL THE END OF THE SUCCESS (BEAUTY AND SOLIDARITY) OF A BUILDING. TOGETHER, SG + ARCHITEKTÓN STANDS FOR SINGAPORE MASTER BUILDERS.
SIGNIFICANCE OF SITE:
BESIDES THE NUMBER OF ARCHITECTURAL AND CONSTRUCTION FIRMS IN CHINATOWN, THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, URBAN REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY AND SINGAPORE INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS ARE ALSO IN CHINATOWN. MUCH ESSENTIALLY, THE SITE OF CHINATOWN HAS A HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND HONOURABLE CONTRIBUTIONS OF SINGAPORE'S PIONEER CONSTRUCTION LABOURERS NAMELY THE SAMSUI WOMEN WHO BUILT SINGAPORE'S INFRASTRUCTURE, GIVES RISE TO THE CHINESE SLOGAN, '设计与建造未来' - TO DESIGN AND BUILD FOR THE FUTURE, TO LEARN FROM THEIR RESILIENCE TOWARDS BUILDING SINGAPORE. THEREFORE, TO CULTIVATE MASTER BUILDERS OF TOMORROW AND BUILD RESILIENT CITIES OF POSSIBILITIES.

DESIGN ISSUE AND IDEA
DESIGN ISSUE:
THERE IS A NEED TO FOSTER COLLABORATION BETWEEN STUDENTS OF DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES WITHIN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT TO CULTIVATE STUDENTS FOR THE DEMAND OF INTEGRATED WORKING SYSTEMS IN THE SECTOR.
DESIGN IDEA:
TO CREATE DIFFERENT DEGRESS OF COLLABORATION WITH 'LIGHT' TO INDUCE VARIOUS WORKING ENVIRONMENTS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF WORKFLOW.
DESIGN STRATEGIES
1. STRUCTURED LEARNING PROGRESSED INTO LEARNING MIXTURE OF COLLABORATION.
2. LEARNING SPACES ARE PUSHED TO THE TOP WHILE APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE IS KEPT TO THE BOTTOM.
3. STREAMLINING WORKFLOW BY COMBINGING WORKSHOP AND CLASSROOM TOGETHER.
4. PRIVATE AREAS ARE PUSHED TO THE TOP WHILE ACTIVITIES ARE KEPT TO THE BOTTOM.
5. AMS NEST MVDV CASE STUDY APPLICATION: PROTRUDE MASSING TO FEATURE 'SPACE OF ATTENTION'.
6. DECONSTRUCT SHOPHOUSE FOR DESIGN METHODOLOGY APPROACH TO SITE.
7. COMMUNITY SPCAES TO WELCOME COLLABORATION AND LEARNING FROM THE COMMUNITY AT SITE.
DESIGN IMPLEMENTATION
DESIGN APPROACH:
THE EXPLORATION OF A USER EXPERIENCE JOURNEY USING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SUN’S PATH AND THE STAGES OF WORKFLOW TO INDUCE VARIOUS WORKING ENVIRONMENTS FOR DIFFERENT STAGES OF WORK. THIS IS DONE WITH ‘LIGHT’ AS A MATERIAL AND MEANS OF MANIPULATION TO BECOME AN ARCHITECTURAL TOOL (PHENOMENOLOGY ARCHITECTURAL ATTEMPT).

REVIT + RHINO3D/GH
RHINO.INSIDE REVIT ALLOWS ME TO INTEGRATE MY LEARNING WITH RHINO3D AND GRASSHOPPER SCRIPTING TO COMPUTE A PARAMETRIC FACADE INTO REVIT AS A REVIT COMPONENT. I ADOPTED THE TUTORIAL FROM RHINO GRASSHOPPER, A YOUTUBE CHANNEL, BUT HAVE ADJUSTED THE SCRIPTING TO MY OWN PROJECT NEEDS. FURTHERMORE, INCORPORATING REVIT GRASSHOPPER COMPONENTS THAT WERE NOT PART OF THE TUTORIAL DISPLAYS MY INTEREST TO COMBINE THE DIGITAL TOOLS TOGETHER TO DELIVER MY ENVIRONMENTALLY SCIENTIFIC FACADE.
ANALYSIS
TO TEST THE PERFORMANCE AND SUCCESS OF THE THEORETICAL PARAMETRIC FACADE, I UTILISED THE NEW ILLUMINANCE AND SOLAR ANALYSIS IN AUTODESK REVIT 2022. THESE ANALYSIS ALLOWS ME TO DETERMINE THE FACADE PERFORMANCE AND DETERMINING THE ALLOCATION OF SPACES IN MY PROJECT.
I FURTHER TEST MY FACADE WITH AUTODESK FLOW, AN OLD AUTODESK SOFTWARE, TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF WIND FLOW BY THE DEVELOPED FACADE WITHIN MY BUILDING AND ITS SURROUNDINGS.

THE FUTURE LEARNING
OF THE
BUILT ENVIRONMENT
AS TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES AND THE INCREASING NEED TO INTEGRATE DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOGETHER FROM ARCHITECTURE, ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION, THE FUTURE LEARNING THROUGH AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) ALLOWS COLLABORATION TO BE POSSIBLE. AS SUCH, I EXPLORED AND DEMOSTRATE THE POSSIBILITY TO BRING MY PROJECT INTO AR MODE SUCH THAT MY DIGITAL MODEL CAN BE SHOWN ANYWHERE UPON SCANNING THE QR CODE BE IT FROM A PDF SENT OR A PRINTED PAPER.
THIS IS TO SHOWCASE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ACCESSIBILITY AND CONVENIENCE WITH AR FOR A CONSTRUCTIVE DISCUSSION TO HAPPEN CONCURRENTLY WITHIN A GROUP RATHER THAN A RESTRICTED 'ONE BY ONE' INTERACTIVE DISCUSSION.
